Woman says dog saved her from choking
DAYTON — Mary Jo Heidenreich was eating what she thought would be a relaxing dinner.
Sitting in her living room, she put her dinner on a tray and began to eat while watching television — and she felt something lodge in her throat.
As she began to choke, her 4-year-old Shih Tzu, Chewie, jumped on her chest.
"He went to jump up in my lap, he hit right below my rib cage," she said. "He wanted to comfort me."
Heidenreich, 45, said, at that point, a small piece of tooth came out of her throat.
Heidenreich is convinced 15-pound Chewie saved her life by jumping on her chest, and perhaps even inadvertently performing the Heimlich maneuver.
Chewie could have landed in the right spot, but it was probably his owner's reaction that ended her choking spell, said Dr. Robert Kahn, who practices family medicine in Kettering.
A Heimlich maneuver is used to dislodge a piece of food, typically between the size of a nickel and a quarter, stuck in the esophagus, Dr. Kahn said.
The piece of tooth might have been lodged in Heidenreich's posterior pharynx – the back of her throat – and that caused her to choke, he said. The pressure of the dog's paws, along with her startled reaction, was probably enough to dislodge the tooth piece, he said.
However, Kahn said, "A 10-year-old kid can perform a Heimlich maneuver."
Chewie wouldn't be the first dog to pull it off.
A Baltimore woman in March of 2007 said her Golden Retriever jumped on her chest while she was choking, dislodging a piece of fruit and saving her life.
From police blotter; Palm Beach
A homeless man called 911 from a pay phone in
the 1200 block of South U.S. 1. A police officer found him sitting on
the ground intoxicated. At first the man told police he called 911 to
report a fight. No one else in the area saw a fight. The man then told
the officer he called because he had nowhere else to go and wanted to
go to jail. The officer left the man. A few minutes later, the man
called 911 again. He told the officer he wanted somewhere to sleep. He
was arrested for abusing 911.
Caterwauling leads to discovery of family cat in wall of N.B. home
THE CANADIAN PRESS
SAINT JOHN, N.B. - When considering home renovations, remember the family cat.
John Walker found his cat in between the walls of his Saint John, N.B., home after a couple of days of searching for the missing feline.
Earlier this week, the Walkers began to look for the orange-and-white cat, believing it had taken off.
But it turns out a carpenter working on the home had put the last panel of drywall up and crack-filled the cat between the walls.
After work one day, Walker asked the carpenter if he'd seen the
cat and he said: "Don't worry. I was looking at the cat when I put the
last panel on."
Walker later heard caterwauling, and busted open the wall with a sledgehammer to release the animal.

My son's 360 took a crap on him the other night. He's only had it for a little over a year. I immediately assumed I'd have to go out and buy him another one. Instead I looked around and found that Microsoft it taking full responsibility for the repair or replacement of their product. How refreshing is that? They have expanded their global coverage warranty to 3 years from the date of purchase. We should be receiving a box with a prepaid shipping label within 3-5 business days. We're happy campers.
