73 Year Old Austrian Admits Fathering 7 Children With Daughter

AMSTETTEN, Austria

A 73-year-old Austrian electrical engineer has confessed to
holding his daughter captive in a secret, windowless cellar for 24
years and fathering seven children by her, police said on Monday.

The case, centered on a nondescript two-storey building in the small
industrial town of Amstetten, bears chilling similarities to that of
Austrian Natascha Kampusch who spent eight years locked up in a
basement before escaping in 2006.

Some parts of the cell in which the family were kept were no more than
1.70 meters (5 ft 6 in) high and officials said the basement even
contained a padded cell.

"This is an appalling crime. I know of no comparable case in Austria,"
Franz Prucher, head of security for Lower Austria told a news
conference.

Elisabeth Fritzl, 42, says her father, Josef Fritzl, lured her into the
basement of the block in 1984 and drugged and handcuffed her before
imprisoning her.

Three of her children, aged 19, 18 and 5, had been locked up in the
basement with her since birth and had never seen sunlight, police said,
raising worries about their physical and mental state. The younger two
were boys, the eldest a girl.

Three other children -- two girls and one boy -- were brought up by Josef and his wife.

As well as confessing to locking up his daughter for 24 years and
siring the seven children, Fritzl also admitted to burning the body of
the seventh child in the heating system when it died soon after birth,
said Franz Polzer, head of criminal investigations in the state of
Lower Austria.

All the victims are receiving medical treatment, said police. State
prosecutors said Fritzl would be summoned before a judge later on
Monday.

Investigators spent the day combing through the cells where the victims
had been held captive. Forensic experts in white uniforms and gloves
carried out boxes of evidence from the house which is on a busy street
with shops.

Fritzl had hidden the entrance to the cell behind shelves and only he
knew the secret code for the reinforced concrete door, said officials.

Photographs showed a narrow passageway leading into other rooms which
included a cooking area, sleeping area and a small bathroom with a
shower. A tube provided ventilation.

Amstetten, located in rolling hills about 130 km (80 miles) west of Vienna, is an industrial town of about 22,000 people.

HOSPITAL VISIT

The case unfolded when the 19-year-old girl became seriously ill and
was taken to hospital, prompting doctors to appeal for the girl's
mother to come forward to provide more details about her medical
history.

Fritzl then brought Elisabeth and her remaining two children out of the
basement, telling his wife -- who thought their "missing" daughter had
chosen to return home, police said.

Elisabeth agreed to make a comprehensive statement to the police after
receiving assurances she would have no further contact with her father,
who she said abused her from the age of 11.

Kampusch, who spent her teenage years held captive, offered to help the victims and told ORF radio she might talk to the family.

"I can imagine that it is very difficult both for the mother of the
children as well as for the wife of the perpetrator to get through
this," she said.

Psychiatrist Max Friedrich, who treated Kampusch, said the children
were undergoing tests in hospital, in particular for problems with
their eyes and skin due to the lack of daylight.

"And socially ... the (children) could not develop any sort of sense of
community which they would get from going to school or playgroup,"
Friedrich told Reuters.

SHAME

The case has raised questions about how authorities and neighbors
failed to notice anything unusual in the "house of horrors," not least
because officials said Fritzl had over the years built extensions to
the secret cellar.

"The community of Amstetten should drown in shame ... The neighbors are
turning a blind eye," the Oesterreich newspaper wrote in an editorial.

The daily Der Standard wrote: "The whole country must ask itself what is really, fundamentally going wrong."

Another puzzle is how Josef's wife Rosemarie could have been unaware of what was going on.

Police have said they believe Rosemarie did not know what happened to
her daughter when she disappeared in 1984. It was assumed Elisabeth had
left voluntarily when her parents received a letter from her saying
they should not search for her.

(Additional reporting by Alexandra Zawadil in Vienna and Reuters
Television; Writing by Karin Strohecker in Vienna and Madeline Chambers
in Berlin; Editing by Ralph Boulton)

Wow! This is absolutely horrid.

Bush eats his words. Again.

Remember at one time how Bush said he wants us to make purchases to stimulate the economy?

Bush released a statement supporting the amended plan, saying it "is
robust, broad-based, timely, and it will be effective. This bill will
help to stimulate consumer spending and accelerate needed business
investment."

Mr. Bush told his friendly audience. “It makes lot of sense, it’s
needed, and you need to pass it as quickly as possible to get money in
the hands of the people who are going to help this economy stay strong.”

President George W. Bush signed legislation on Wednesday to put
spending money into the pockets of millions of Americans in an effort
to give the sagging U.S. economy a "booster shot."

Later -Obama made a comment about gas prices and now Bush is changing his tune, telling us it's to offset the high prices we're seeing (more like paying) at the pump. You mean to tell me he didn't see this months ago?

This money is going to help Americans offset the high prices we're
seeing at the gas pump and at the grocery store, and it will also give
our economy a boost to help us pull out of this economic slowdown.

Bush says he is confident that the money delivered by the treasury
department will help consumers struggling with the rising cost at the
fuel pumps and the grocery store.

I called my cable company just to get my account number. I got suckered into paying more for a faster Internet connection. It's not doing what they promised me it would, yet I now have Cinemax and Showtime free x 12 months. Hmm.

I went here to test my connection speed.

What a rip off. It seems like I've been getting ripped off a lot lately. A word of advice - if you use your ATM/Debit card make sure your receipt matches what actually came out of your bank. Cashiers at your fast food restaurants could be pulling a scam on you. My receipt read $4.30 yet $7.30 came out of my bank account. This happened twice at the same place. It pays to check with a fine tooth comb. You might be surprised at what you find.

Another interesting thing, Hubby and I went to our favorite Mexican food restaurant and we were overcharged by $16. This is how they secure a tip. WTF?! In a few days my bank will receive for the actual charge and credit me. Meanwhile that extra $16 is on hold. Ridiculous. Why can't I be charged for the amount I think I'm really paying? It's not right.

Shocker - Kenneth Keith Kallenbach died. A Howard Stern wack packer. He was only 39. A month ago he was accused of trying to pull a young girl into a car. He's been in prison and supposedly where he caught the pneumonia that killed him. I am now hearing this girl is recanting her story. Either way they'll never know the truth.

You are brave and courageous, even when most people would be terrified.

You are intellectual and philosophical. You are more concerned with thoughts than action.

You are an amazingly hard worker. You aren't spoiled and you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

You are easily influenced by other people. You're quite impressionable, so you should only be around people who are a good influence.

What Do Your Feet Say About You?

okay. i'll go with it. the last line is so not true.

Last night I made my family suffer through an hour of darkness in honor of Earth Day. They were so pissed. It was funny. Then I crashed. I woke up to find 98% of the votes were in and Hill was still the winner. She still has a battle ahead, but like she said "A win is a win." That'd be true.

My iPod froze about 8 hours ago. It ran out of battery and finally released itself about an hour ago. I guess it didn't like the song it was playing.

P and I are going to start walking at work. She told me to bring some tennis shoes and I said, I beg your pardon. It was almost as if she cursed me out. Nevertheless, she's right. It's time to get off our fat arses and get moving. That we will.

I started the day not knowing it was going to end so wonderfully. A
friend from the other side of the world found out I was trying to get a
hold of him and was gracious enough to return my message. : ) Smart
kid. : D

Nothing else to say, time to go sleepy and look forward to Friday eve.

My friend was at a record store last night and ran into James Spader. I won't go into too many details (privacy and all that) but I will say that I have a little note from James Spader waiting for me. Very cool. She said he was very nice and polite. I have a feeling he is who he is on TV, talk shows, etc. You never really hear anything bad about him. What you see is what you get.

I have some Boston Legal episodes to watch today.

Edited to add video of record store visit from this past Saturday. There are more videos but this one had the best close up. It's a quickie but a goodie. Watch him as he looks kinda surprised that someone said something to him. Or maybe he seemed a little guarded, but that just Spader, he's freaky like that.

If he's 8 months now that means he was 4 months old when he was abandoned. I can't believe the owners never sent anyone to look for him. Amazing how this pup survived. I have so many questions for this dog, however, I'm sure he's in shock and many questions will go unanswered.
